Banksias are an iconic Australian native plant, named after botanist Joseph Banks. There are over 75 species, with the majority found in Western Australia. Their striking, unmistakable foliage and cone like flowers make them very popular for gardens and floristry.
The amazing flowers produce an abundance of nectar, making them vital in the food chain of the Australian bush for all sorts of nectarivorous animals, including birds, bats, rats, possums, stingless bees and a host of invertebrates. Many of the Banksias are rare and endangered, being threatened by processes including land clearing, frequent burning and disease.
Banksias are top of my list for Australian wildflowers!
