One of a kind neckpiece created for the exhibition Reflect/Refract.
The predominant ecosystem that is disappearing to make way for urban development along Perth’s coastline is the Banksia Woodland. This landscape is increasingly refracted with native fauna displaced. The precious gold banksia leaf is used to reflect to the viewer the significance of this vegetation and its fragile state.
Silver geometric shapes symbolise the urban landscape with embossed plant motifs, giving the impression of what was there before the land was cleared. I found the rusted metal when walking in bushland on the fringes of urban development and it seemed like the perfect template to create a piece encompassing the jarring contrasts within the landscape on our outer fringes.
Made from sterling silver, rusted steel and 18ct gold.
This neckpiece won the Highly Commended award in the exhibition.
